Purpose: To determine the change in corneal curvature after administration of topical 1% Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride.
Setting: Matthayom Phraratchathan Nayao School, Chachoengsao province, Thailand.
Methods: Eight hundred and twenty-two eyes of 411 healthy students with a mean age of 15.05 years (ranges between 12 to 18 years) were enrolled in this interventional study. Keratometric values (K-values) before and approximately 1 hour after the administration of topical 1% Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride were obtained using autokeratometer. And the difference between the two was analyzed by a paired t test.
Results: The changes in corneal curvature between both right eyes and left eyes are not statistical significant (p = 0.321). The mean K-values before and after the administration of 1% Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride were 43.54 ± 1.93 diopters (D) and 43.61 ± 1.35 D, respectively. The mean difference was 0.07 ± 1.37 D (p = 0.162).
Conclusion: The use of topical 1% Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride does not have any statistically significant effect on the corneal curvature.
