           Visual Outcome After High Volume Cataract Surgery In A Rural Charity Hospital In Pakistan

                      PURPOSE:             To analyze the visual outcome after high volume cataract surgery in a rural charity hospital in Pakistan. 
                      METHODS:            Prospective study was undertaken at LRBT Free Secondary eye hospital, Mandra.  
            All the cataract surgeries performed on patients of >10 years of age from 1st January 2009 to 31st December 2009 were included in the study. 
                      Visual assessment card which is part of the patient discharge card was filled, pre-op and post-op for all the patients completing their 8 weeks follow up period. 
                      At the end of each month, post-op best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) findings for all those patients who completed their 8 weeks of follow-up were recorded on the visual assessment card and categorized using the WHO/ICEH guidelines 
                      RESULTS:            Total of 9449 cataract surgeries were performed during this period 
            92% of patients attained the best corrected visual acuity of better than 6/12. 
                      CONCLUSION:            High quality (92% having ≥6/18) cataract surgery results can be achieved in a high volume setting.
