Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of 23g sutureless vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)
Methods: Retrospective review of records of patients who underwent 23g sutureless vitrectomy within a 1 year period for PDR by one surgeon (Sjakon Tahija).
Results: 45 patients underwent 23g sutureless vitrectomy for PDR using the Alcon Accurus between June 2008 and June 2010. Follow-up ranged from 3 to 6 months. Presenting visual acuity (VA) ranged from hand movements to 0.5. VA increased in 41 eyes (91.11%), decreased in 2 eyes (0.44%), and remained unchanged in 2 eyes (0.44%). VA in one eye decreased to NLP due to rubeotic glaucoma. There were no cases of post operative endophthalmitis .
Conclusion: 23g sutureless vitrectomy is safe and effective in managing PDR
