Purpose: to determine the efficacy of mitomycin-C(MMC) for treatment of focal trichiasis with adequate eyelid position.
Methods: A prospective, consecutive clinical trial was conducted. All patients with trichiasis were considered, but those with abnormal position of eyelid were excluded. A cohort of 10 patients underwent and was examined at 1 month, 3 months after epilation. We used 0.02% topical MMC as adjunctive methods to epilation of trichiasis.
Results: Single intraoperative topical application of 0.02% MMC at lash follicle openings prevented the regrowth of trichiatic eyelashes following epilation. After 3 months, almost all of lash follicles treated with MMC had no cilia. There were no complications.
Conclusion: The authors expected that epilation with 0.02% topical MMC may be an easy, safe, inexpensive and effective precedure to remove trichiatic lashes in normal eyelid.
