           Comparison Of Diagnostic Accuracy Of Ultrasonography And X-ray In Detecting Intraocular Foreign Body (IOFB)In Open Globe Injury

          Perpose: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of B-Scan Ultrasonography & X-ray in detecting & localizing IOFB in open globe injury. 
                      Methods:             Study design- comparative cross sectional study 
            Place of study- DMCH & NIOH.  
            Period of study- Januarry 2008- September 2009 
            Sampling- Random. 
            Sample size- 60 cases. 
                      Results: Total 60 cases were compiled for data analysis. The age range was 9-60 years with Mean of 26.5. Male female ratio was 5:1. The commonest affected group was factory worker (50%). Commonest injury was sclero-corneal (60%). The commonest location of IOFB was central  (40%). The sensitivity & specificity of X-ray in detecting IOFB was 93.1% and 100% respectively. The accuracy of X-ray in detecting IOFB was 93.3%. Both sensitivity and specificity of B-scan Ultrasonography in detecting IOFB was 100%. The accuracy of B-Scan Ultrasonography in detecting IOFB was 100%. The sensitivity and specificity of X-ray in localizing IOFB were 51.7% & 100% respectively. The accuracy of X-ray in localizing IOFB was 53.3%. Both sensitivity & specificity of B-scan Ultrasonography in localizing IOFB was 100%. The accuracy of B-scan Ultrasonography in localizing IOFB was 100%. 
                      Conclusions: B-Scan Ultrasonography is more effective than X-ray in detecting and localizing IOFB in open globe injury. B-Scan is unique in delineating ocular structures. Though no single tool is sufficient for exact evaluation of open globe injury with retained IOFB, B-Scan is more helpful considering the planning of microsurgical management.
