           Visual Function with Contralateral Implantation of Lentis +3.00 D and +1.50 D Mplus Multifocal Intraocular Lenses

          Purpose: To examine the performance of patients implanted with a combination of the Lentis MPlus +3.00D and Mplus +1.50D IOL in photopic and mesopic conditions. 
                      Methods: 15 patients were implanted with a Lentis MPlus IOL +3.00 addition in one eye and +1.50 D in the other. Uncorrected and Best distance corrected visual acuity at distance (BCVA), intermediate (at 80 cm BDCIVA) and near (at 40 cm BDCNVA) (logMAR chart), contrast sensitivity (Pelli-Robson chart/CSV-1000) and binocular defocus curves from +1.5 D to -5.0 D in 0.5 D randomised steps were measured in both photopic (85cd/m2) and mesopic (3 cd/m2) conditions. In addition, monocular defocus curves were measured to assess binocular summation and binocular reading speed was assessed (MNRead) in photopic conditions. 
                      Results: Monocular BCVA was similar with both lenses (p>0.05) whereas BDCNVA at 33cm was significantly better with the +3.00 D IOL (p<0.01). The defocus curve profile of the Lentis Mplus +3.00 D showed a large peak in visual acuity between 2.00 D and 2.50 D (equivalent to 40-50 cm). The +1.50 D addition IOL showed a peak between 1.00 D and 1.50 D (equivalent to 0.66-1 m). Bilaterally the defocus curve profile showed an extended range of clear vision through distance intermediate and near vision. This profile was maintained in mesopic light conditions. 
                      Conclusion: The combination of a +1.50 D and +3.00 D addition provides an extended range of clear vision and is recommended in patients where good intermediate VA is of equal priority to the patient as near VA.
